Yaksha from Pitalkhora Mishra, Ram Nath. Yaksha Cult and Iconography.( New Delhi: Munshiram, 1979). plate 54

In the Mah€m€yur… Vajrap€Ši is the tutelatory deity of R€jagriha. In this role, he participates, with nearly every other Yaka, in the performance of protective acts. They protected not only human beings, but also physical places. This phenomenon was so widely spead during the early period of Indian history that

"According to the Buddhist and Jain texts almost every city of importance has one or more Yakas, and in several case the abodes of Yaka were known as caityas."

It is tempting to want to equate the origin of Yakas with this function and the development of their various other forms as derivative of their function as deities of specific cities, trees, or ponds. While we have no way of isolating these factors if we proceed from the evidence, both sculptural and scriptural,

it seems highly likely that Vajrap€Ši began his illustrious career as a Yaka in R€jagriha.
